OUR FIRST GETAWAY IN THREE YEARS….

Yeah, you read that title correctly… My husband and I have not been on a getaway together, without our kids, in three years. Sure, we’ve been to dinner or something here and there, but not a full 24 hours…
It was an experience, some bumps in the road, it took a whole lot of planning, and we even learned a few things….

I know you’re probably wondering why in the world it’s been three years… Well, we moved to Orlando three years ago…(reference my previous blog for that decision) and we are no longer close to any real family… It’s just us.
We do have a sitter whom we trust with our kids, but as luck would have it, she moved away to go to school, making it once again hard to get away.

We’ve had a lot of ups and downs this year, and knew we really needed to take time for ourselves, for our relationship. So we made plans with said sitter to come home for a weekend and stay with our kids, so we could get away.
This was no cheap task… So here we are paying a whole lot of money, because lets be honest, 24 hours with my kids… you’re going to need to be rewarded greatly. Now we are already in deep, we still have to finance the rest of the trip, as well as have things together for our sitter. This took a big blow to a one income household. We honestly thought about just canceling the trip for these reasons.

But, this is why I am so glad we didn’t…..

As soon as we walked out that door we where instantly excited to just be alone, have a conversation with no interruption, drive around anywhere we wanted… and that’s just what we did. We grabbed Starbucks, and just drove, with the windows down, music up and found cool places in Central Florida we had never seen before. We stopped as we pleased, and got to just spend time together.

We got to reconnect, we talked about life, we talked about our kids… even though we missed them, we had missed US too.

We ate dinner together, and laughed, and enjoyed each others’ company. We had to make a Target run, (because in true woman fashion I did forget to pack some things I just had to go get) and it might have been my favorite trip to target yet. My husband is a man-child, and I enjoyed every second.

If you cant act like children together, are you even Best Friends?

We got a hotel, and had late night Pizza in bed…. Because, well….  we could.

Carbs don’t count on Vacation!

However, as luck would have it, we had to take AAA home the next morning… and as I wanted to get upset, I realized all I could do was make light of it. We’d had an awesome day/evening the day before, and this was a small bump that ended our trip a little earlier than we had planned, but it didn’t take away from the day before… And,  as much as I do love my children, and my whole life, getting the chance to do all this with my husband was amazing… like falling in love yet again, with someone you know, is a super great thing.

We decided that from this year forward we will make a point to take this trip once a year, to spend time together, to laugh, to play….and to make our relationship number one for 24 hours.

If I learned anything it is how important this was for us, and I know it’s easy to get caught up in life, and kids, and bills…

Taking the time to truly focus on each other is something that is so important, and I encourage you to make it a priority for you as well!

  

…..I am already thinking of plans for next year!
